Gosh it was so good to see all of these pics! Looks like the homecoming was boss, and I loved seeing everyone there!  I love Elder Darling so much, and the comparrison to Dillon Lamb is a pretty solid one haha.  Yeah he was pretty serious with Hally before.  Of course I knew he was spending the night in Boston ahha, I begged him to go to Fenway Park for me haha.  Thanks a bunch for writing all of this, and for going up, that means a lot that you guys were there and got to meet all of them

I will go see Elder Gooch later tonight because he is in Praia.  His homecoming is the 14, you guys should super go up, that would mean a lot to me.  Santiago is hot, but not rediculious.  We work out everyday, and I'm eating ridiculously healthy right now.  Thanks a bunch for the email, it means a lot that you guys always right me.  Its super weird to me that you guys saw madi, but its fun! Maio/Assomada!

Island of Maio

Maio/The Boat

This week we had a chance to do a division on the beautiful island of Maio.  Our boat left at 430 A.M.  So we woke up, and grabbed out stuff, and got in a taxi to go to the port to catch the boat.  First of all, the taxi driver had to wake up at 330 to come get us, take us to the port, and return home. The taxi ride earning him whats equal to 2 dollars in the U.S.  Thank your lucky stars your not that guys...  Anyway, so we get there, and are all ready to get on the boat, then they announce that we should have our ID's.  They dont check them to get on the boat, but they do to get on the plane.  Usually they dont announce that for the boat, but it was a good thing that they said that because neither Elder Figs, or myself had our ID's.  Which means we would have no problem getting on the boat, but we had to take a plane back, and there is no chance in the world that they would let us on the plane without ID's.  So we took a ride in a truck full of fish (it smelled terrible) back to our house, grabbed the IDs, and got back just in time to catch the boat, avoiding getting stuck on the island of Maio..  

I was super nervous for the boat ride, because my track record with boats and not throwing up isnt too good.  So I took a comple vomit pills, and thank goodness, the boat was smooth and nice.  We got to see the sun rise right over some clouds and it was beautiful.  

We got to Maio at like 10 in the morning.  Maio is so pretty.  The only thing people do in Maio is fish.  The island is very small, with not too many people.  There is a lot of tourism there because of the beautiful beaches.  Saw more white people than I am used to seeing.  We had pizza from some Italian guy.  He didnt speak any portugese, but we got by communicating haha.  
It was amazing to see the church there.  Maio was opened by missionaries a about a year ago, and now has about 35 members.  It was incredible to go over there and see everything.  The chruch is very small, and the missionaries have classes to train the members how to do things every night.  None of the members has seen a church service with more than 30 people, so they are training them a lot just how little things should be done.  Little things like not answering your phone in sacrament meeting, and things like that.  They are learning haha.   

3 Best Friends

I had a very funny thought this week on Friday when we were coming back from Maio on the plane.  Spent the entire day with my comp, Elder Figs from Portugal, and Elder Camargo, from Brazil.  And while at different places throughout the day, people would as us, "So you three are American? Or you three are from Brazil? Or you guys are Portugese?"  And we passed the entire day together, teaching, and going on the plane and what not.  And we were all just great friends.  A Brazilian, Portugese, and American just hanging out all day, just like we best friends. The church brings together so many cultures and different types of people, its incredible.  We spoke Portugese half of the day, and English half of the day.  They are both learning English, and both speak it very well.  They are two of my favorite Elders on the mission.

Assomada is Made a District!

Yesterday Assomada was made a district of its own!  Before, it was part of the Praia Stake, and they had to travel a long way to Praia for meetings and what not.  Now it is a district of its own, and it will be such a blessing for the people there.  It means a lot for me because I had a chance to visit every part of the Island when I served in Assomada, and I know all the bishops, and people from all the branches.  I am really good friends with the newly made Branch President Torres, and I am really excited for all those people up there.  It was one of the more rewarding days of the mish for sure.

Small and Simple Things

It was such an incredible experience to go to the Island of Maio.  Knowing that the church didnt exist there a year ago, and to go and see the members, and see their love for the gospel.  These people may not have much, but the have faith, and that has a lot of value in the eyes of God.  Literally all of the members there have been members for less than a year, and they are all still learning how the church is suppose to function.  They are all doing there best, and it was incredible to see them.  

We had the chance to hear from Elder Morreria of the 70.  He came down for the creation of the District in Assomada.  He said something that really hit me hard.  He said that "Cabo Verde is an inspiration for the rest of the Europe missions and areas.  You may not have a lot of material things, but you have something that has a lot more value in the eyes of God.  And thats your faith.  The entire europe areas look to you as examples of faith"  

He's right, the people are incredible.  From small and simple things, great things are brought to pass.

The Jarvis/Figs Era Begins

January 19, 2015

First week on the job with my new Portuguese comp, Elder Figueiredo.  We have been friends for a while, and it is really nice serving with him. 

Rosaria

This week we baptized a woman named Rosara, and her little daughter.  We actually found her on Christmas Eve, at like 8:55, and we were really close to going home for the night, but we went to the house of a less active and she was there.  She told us that she had been waiting for Elders for a while, that she had already talked to them in the past, and she was close to getting baptized in the past.  She changed a lot over those 3 weeks, and her baptism was sweet. 

Fogo Elders

The Fogo ZLs came and spent the night at our house before the council on Tuesday.  It was funny to see those guys, and talk with them about people and experiences from Fogo.  I have so much saudades for that place, I am in love with the people there.  And I miss the Kreolo so much haha.  Everything was good with them, other than them dirtying up the house, it was great to have them over. 

Funny Things

We had two extremely funny things happen this week, and its worth writing about. We were teaching the plan of salvation the other day, and we were talking about the glories.  Like cel ter tel stuff.  And elder Figs explains the Celestial kingdom, and explains that God lives there.  They we point for the Ter kingdom, and we said ´´this place is for...´´  ´´The Animals´´  Aw... So close Evandoo, the answer we were looking for was not animals... 

The other was a man explaining to us that the trinity, was like an egg.  Where God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost are like the shell, yoke, and the egg white.  Just thought it was a little humerus.  Elder Figs and I were a little confused, we just thought it was a funny analogy. 

Spiritual Stuff

I had a chance to give a training on Obedience at Zone Conference.  It was really good, and I learned a lot while preparing it.  We started off talking about the nefi story with laban.  Where he was asked to kill him.  And we talked about why Nefi put that in the book.  Why didn't he just say, and we went back the third time to get the plates, and he was successful, or we obtained them, or something.  Why is that story even in there. Of if he is going to put it in there, why didnt he hide it somewhere in the Alma Chapters, to ensure that it would go unread by all of us.
 For me, I think he is trying to teach us something. I think he put in there,  on pg 8, so even the most casual reader will read it.  And I think he did it to show us the importance of doing the Fathers will.  Because he was taught from a young age not to kill, this was drilled in his brain from the time he was a little boy.  It was all about doing the Fathers will, over his own.    So we had a discussion on that, then talked about how it applies to us.  I may have gotten some of the stuff from E. Holland.  Then we watched a video, baller video, and it went well.  Here is link if any of you want to watch it.  I love you guys, have a great week! 

I had to send this to all the return missionaries from CV, so someone would understand the kreolo.  Had a great week from Lem Fer.  I saw this little kid walking with the "I <3 Jesus" hat, and asked him if I could take a pic with him.  After, he asked me for 10 escudos, or a dime. I gave it to him, and we had ourselves a deal.  

Evandro

One of the more rewarding moments of my mission was watching Evandro get baptised.  He was pretty deep into trouble, and had a pretty messed up life for a really long time.  Elders have tried to talk to him forever, and he just never really wanted to change.  His mom was baptized a couple weeks ago, and I think that helped him.  Three weeks ago he decided he really wanted to change, and he did.  When he bore his testomony after his baptism it was so sincere.  He referred to the spirit as being "This Energy Feeling".  Sometimes we refer to it as a burning, but I feel like "Energy" describes the spirit pretty well. 

Int. with President

Had a chance to do interviews with President this week, and that is always a great learning experience.  He is so good at what he does, and I learned a lot that should help with the work.  

Cheese and Chocolate 

Possibly the highlight of the week was our neighbor from Holland giving us cheese and chocolate from Holland.  It was so incredible!  We hadn't had normal cheese is over a year and  half, and it is soo good!  

Spiritual Stuff

Elder Carlos A Goday gave a talk that I really enjoyed in General Conference.  Partly because it was in Portugese.  But he talks about the question "If I keep living, the way Im living right now, will I cumprir all the promises in my Patriartical Blessing?"  I was thinking about this a lot, because one of my biggest fears, and IM sure it is for a lot of missionaries, was wondering if  was doing everything I could to become the person God wants me to be when I go home.  And if we look at it like he puts it, cumprir our promises, I think thats a good way to measure if we are doing things right.

This was a pretty solid week from Praia.  We have council tomorrow, and I have to give a training the next day, so I wont email too long because I need to plan the training.  Itll be on obedience because a couple of missionaries in the zone have a hard time finding ºmotivationº to work...  So Ill show this video, then talk about it.  heres the link

Everything is going well from out here.  We had a baptism this week, his name is Kevin, he was sweet.  We did a division with some other elders, that's always good.  

So I will serve with Elder Figuriedo until the end of the month, then I will receive a new comp at the start of next month.  I'm excited for that.  He is a boss, and Ive known him for a very long time.  We became zls at the same time, about a year ago.  I saw a couple of guys from Assomada this week, that was fun.  Ill write more later, this computer is awful.  Love you guys!

Natal, Natal...

Pretty solid week from LF Praia.  Olbviously the best part having the chance to talk with the Fam.  Everything was good out here.  We went and ate at some members houses for lunch on Christmas, sang some Christmas Songs for folks, and taught a couple first lessons.  Everything went well.  

It was super nice talking to the family.  I love being a missionary.  Everything is good out here, not a ton to write because I said just about everything on Thursday.  

I love all you guys, and hope you had a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.   

Back to Praia

Pretty crazy week getting transfered back to Praia. 

The Boat

Because of the smoke, no airplanes can leave Fogo, so I had to take the boat to Praia.  I had heard about the boat, and what I had heard wasn´t too good.  But I told myself I was going to be a champ, and take it like a man, and not get sick or anything.. 

That mindset went away very quickly haha.  I believe God was pretty sick of hearing from me, because that was a four hour prayer the whole time.  Everyone was sick except for Pres and Sister Mathews, because they were used to it.  I will give a couple quotes from people on the boat.  

Elder Nelson (Who was taking the boat to Praia, to go home) ´´That was the biggest trail of my mission´´ 

´´ I looked over at Sister Mathews! She was laughing at me, she should have been crying with me!´´

I told Pres I was never leaving this island again.  Literally one of the hardest things I have been through in my life.  

Christmas Party

I actually had 2 Christmas parties, because we had one in Fogo before I left, and one in Praia when I got here.  They were super good, and the food was excellent.  We had sweet green Christmas suspenders, and the party was fixe.  

Elder Camargo

I have been serving around Elder Camargo for almost my whole mission, but I had never had a chance to teach with him.  And he had worked this area before.  It was so sweet to teach with him, and I super wish I had the chance to serve with him.  When I left Fogo, I was in pretty good shape because there is nothing to eat there.  But Camargo bought food like crazy, and with it being Christmas, wasn't the best combination of things ever.  He is incredible.  

Spiritual Stuff

Studying Lucas 2, and Jesus The Christ, I had a couple interesting thoughts this week.  When Mary talks about being worried, and how Mary and His dad had been worried looking for him.  And Jesus responds, saying, how could my father be worried about me.  Dont you know that I am doing His business.  Cleary implying something that Mary seems to have forgotten from time to time.  Who really was Jesus´s dad.  And I started thinking about that, and our true potential.  And whose children we really are.  And it was a good thought I had.

oh the boat was the biggest trail of my mission haha. I threw up the whole time, it was terrible.  elder Zendimela is good, he is super humble, and goes home in two weeks, so I will have a new comp soon here.  There is 18 douplas of missionaries, and my week was hectic, but I love it.  

Yeah things are a little busier.  The only thing I miss is the study time I had in cova fig.  I was diving so much into Jesus the Christ, and now I am just buying boat tickets for maio and fogo.  I watched a movie, sons of provo, the other day.  You need to watch it dad. Its hilarious and we could quote it together haha.  Thanks for all the updates, it was great to hear about everything.  We will try to skype at about 3 our time here.  Remember Pres is being pretty strict about the whole 40 min skype thing.  Obviously I dont agree 100%, but its the principal of obediencia so lets aim for that.  Elder Zandamela´s parents are actually divorced, so I might get to do it for a while if he has to skype them separately.

Dear Fam.

So Im gettin transfered to Praia to serve with Elder Zendimela.  Super stoked, I love praia.  Everything is good.  

Had a super sweet time serving with Ellder Crooks, he is one of my best friends in the whole world.  It was a lot of fun serving in Cova Fig.  Ill tell you guys more about that when we skype next week.  It was pretty sad.  I cried a little yesterday when i found out I had to leave Fogo.  It has the best people in the world, and they are just incredible.  I have been here the last 7 months of my life, and I freaking love it.  Im extremely excited to go back to praia.  I honestly dont have much desire to go anywhere else besides Fogo and Santiago.  Everyone says theyre the best two, and I love praia.  Im not sure if you  guys remember, but last Christmas elder Darling and Smith were my Zls in Lem Ferriera, and we spent the night over there for christmas and had a lot of fun.  Its fun to me that I will spend both christmasºs on the mish in the same house.  It will be a nice change.  Cova is very isolated, and I just saw my comp, and the members.  Praia is the biggest zone in the mission, and has a ton of missionaries that I will see everyday.  Well play soccer on P days, and go Suckapeda hunting and what not.  My best friend Elder Bazzarone is the AP, and lives close to me, so Ill get to see him a lot, and work close with him.  It will be weird being on the same island as pres.  On Fogo there is kind of a relax feeel, because even if Pres wanted to come out here, he would have to get a boat.  All the planes are shut down to praia because of the smoke from the volcano.  So I will be taking a four hour boat trip tomorrow, and I am excited about that.  I will also, hopefully, have the chance to go over to Maio and do divisions there because they are in our zone.  

Overall Im sad to leave Fogo, its my home, and theyre my people.  Im very excited to get back to praia, and see everyone and everything.  I will also get a chance to go up and see Noberto and Enice, and all my recent converts in Achada Traz, and that will be exciting.  I love you guys so much, thanks for all you do, have a great week!

Why are these two serving together?

I think Elder Gooch said it best when he said, ``I feel bad for any poor soul that has to be taught the Gospel from you two...`` 

Solid week with my MTC bud Elder Crooks.  With the volcano still going off, and us still feeling the effects from it, it was a strange week.  

We had a zone conference, and we did a sweet musical number, ``Angels We Have Heard on High``.  I played the piano with Elder Naylor, Gilbert, Crooks, and Pauli singing.  That went as well as it could have with us five, and they asked us to do it again this week for the Christmas party with President.  

It was kind of a crazy week chasing everyone down, but we ended the week with a couple of baptisms, and everything went well.  

Friday morning we went and filled up the fount preparing for Saturday.  Then we got there Saturday morning, and some little seminary student had drained the water.  He was actually there when we saw the fount empty Saturday morning.  He proceeded to laugh, thinking he was the funniest kid ever.  So Elder Crooks and I carried buckets of water for about an hour and a half to fill up the fount.  It was a little inconvenience, and I was more than a little frustrated at the kid.  But Elder Crooks are trying to be more positive during this Christmas season, and we forgave the little child.  I'm sure all of us have our own little draining the fount moments in our life haha.     We also had 110 people at church, and its amazing to see the Lord work with these people here.  

I love being a missionary, and I love serving with Elder Crooks.  

Hope all of us keep Christ in our lives, and try to be a little more like him everyday.  ``The only thing you can really give Christ is your agency.  Its the only thing that is really ours to give.  And when we do that, He makes us what we were made to be``~ Elder Packer

Ill try to write a little, but we hardly have any time.  This was a sweet week from Fogo.  Im exausted right now, just getting off a van from sao filipe.  We have our christmas party this week, and that should be fun.  Sad to think that Ill prob be leaving Fogo, and not seeing if for a long time pretty soon here.

Last monday it rained like crazy, and we found a little time to email.
Tuesday we went to Estancy Rokie, and all three of our baptisms were good.  Wednesday was a normal working day.  We had a zone meeting, that was fun.
We did a special musical number where I played ªCantos anjos glorious nas ceusª or angels we have heard on high on the piano.  I practiced a sweet way to play it, we had Elder Naylor, Pauli, Crooks, and Gilbert singing.  We were asked to do it again for president this week at the christmas party this week, so that will be fun.  Ive actually done like 4 special musical numbers, I just keep forgetting to tell you guys about it haha.  

So next week in Stake Conference, and we found out that we couldnt baptise that week because people would have to wait a week to get confirmed.  And we had two dates marked for next week.  So we asked them if they wanted to move it up and get baptised this week, and they said yep! So we ended up having 5 baptisms this week.  Most Ive ever had in a week on the mish.  It was pretty sweet.
Funny experiece.  So Crooks and I go to fill up the fount friday for the baptism saturday morning at 10.  So we fill it up friday afternoon, and everything goes well.  Then we wake up saturday, after all of them passed the interviews Friday, and crooks tells me about his dream haha.  He says that in his dream, we filled up the fount, and Elder Accord was there and it was super funny.  And then some kid drained the fount, and it was a big problem.  End of dream.  So we show up to the baptism an hour early at 9.  No water in the fount.  Some little seminary student thought he was funny Friday night, and drained all the water.  So we had to bucket all the water in, because it takes like 3 hours for the fount to fill up.  And we didnt have any rope.  So I had to pretty much go swimming with my body to get the water out haha.  It was funny, and it all worked out.  The whole time I was thinking that God isnt just going to give us five baptisms without a lot of work and stress haha.  But they all got baptised, and all got confirmed the next day and everything went well.
Our frequency also got up to 110.  A little improvement from the 45 we had when I got here haha.
Everything is good here.  I love Cova.  I havent changed more in any area, and I dont feel like I have changed any area more.  Everyting is good, and Crooks is sweet! I love you guys so much, and hope you have a great week.
BTW, we have to be obedient this christmas and only skype for 45 mins to an hour, so maybe write some questions of things we need to talk about down, and that will be sweet! Thanks a bunch for everything you guys do! Love Nate

Had to shower friday saturday, sunday nights because the volcanic ash and dust was all over us haha

Had a baptism

 cova is super safe, its a long way away, and it would never get here.  The town is dead during the day because everyone goes over to Cha to help clean up, and to see it what not.  Theres a ton of clean up work to do over there, and the volcano continues to go off, and they need all the help they can get over there.  Church was good.  We had a frequency of 84, with 6 investigators coming, and all 3 of our baptisms for this week came.  The work is going really well

Sorry I did not have a chance to write this P day, not sure how many of you already heard, but the Volcano on the island of Fogo went off Sunday.  I was in church and the Bishop from the other ward pulled me out and said "Elder! The Volcano is leaking!"   Things have been a little "different" on this island the last couple days.  Everything is good, and Ive been advised by my mission president not to write too much in detail.  But everyone is safe, and everything is good here on Fogo.  Please pray for the people, homes, and families over by the volcano.  Love all you guys, have a great week!

Elder Jarvis

So just a little bit more so you guys know whats going on.  I have a sweet view of the volcano from my house, and the sky lights up red at night from reflection from the lava haha.  Its the coolest, pretiest thing ever.  We live quite a way away, and we are super duper safe.  Some of teh other elders got moved but we are super safe.  Its the first time its gone off in 20 years, and its super sweet, so pretty.  We havent had power the last couple of days, but are enjoying it now.  I freaking love you guys for sending shoes, but I told you not too haha! I really am grateful that you sent them, but they are a size and a half too big, theyre 12 and my other chruch shoes are 10 1/2, but its okay! I think the cheapest thing might be to have me send them back and you guys can return them, but let me know what you think.  Also you didnt comment on my camera being stolen, not sure if I should buy another one here, or if you want to try to send me one.  Ill write more later, love you guys

No IM still here in cova.  We are safe, just never have power.  All the store were closed yesterday, so that cChristmaspackage turned more into a survival kit haha.  Everything is good now, we have a little power and the stores are open.  Ill write more about the volcano later, Pres Matthews told us not to write too much, and I don't have a ton of time, the power will go out soon.  Im safe, and I have some of the coolest pics in the world haha.  

Guess Who's Comps?

So my camera was kinda stolen from the church this week.  I left in in my bag during a noite de integressao, and someone stole it.  I was upset that the camera was stolen, but more than that pretty much all the pics from the MTC up until Assomada were gone.  And also all the video logs and almost everything from fogo was stolen as well.  Kinda really sucked, but I prayed, and I will remember all this mission stuff, I just felt bad I wont have as many pics to send you guys.  But I have sent home the majority of the stuff, and we are going to try to find who has the camera.  Its a super small town, so maybe we find the person haha.  Im not sure If I should buy a new camera here, or have you guys send me one.  But just wait for a little while, and maybe it pops up haha. Love you guys.

Elder Crooks

First week on the job with my newly aquired MTC foe Elder Crooks.  Elder Crooks is such a boss. He´s such a sweet missionary.  As of right now I have served with comps from America, Cape Verde, Mosambeque, Argentina, Tonga, El Salvador, and Texas, (yes Elder Crooks claims Texas is its own country). We had a super good week, and talked Forever about the MTC days haha.  Its funny because we both hated Portugese in the MTC, now looking back its funny to think that at some point in time we didnt speak this language haha.  He is one of the most goofy, hard working Elders I have ever been around, and I freaking love this guy.  

Estancy Hokie

There is a zone way up the mountain called Estancy Hokie that we have recently started working.  We have gone up there twice, both times by car.  On Wednesday we missed the car, and we figured we would just walk, couldnt be that far.  After an hour and a half of walking on Fogo volcanic rock, we finally made it up there.  Never doing that again. But there are a lot of prepared people up there, and we actually had nine investigators from there show up to church.  

Growth 

Sunday was probably one of the best days on my mission, meaning it was one of the best days of my life.  We went to church, and had nine investigators from Estancy Hokie come to church. We had also been working really hard with a big less active family, and we got them to go to church.  We also had a couple other less actives come to church and it was incredible.  The frequency on Sunday was 100.  My second week in Cova Fig, the frequency was down to 46 at one point.  Last week it was 68, and this week it was 100.  It was the most amazing feeling in the world to see that sacrament meeting room fill up.  Its tough to explain, but this has definantly been my hardest, most rewarding area.  And seeing the growth, and the Lords hand here in Cova Fig was one of the coolest things ever.  

Spiritual Stuff

All they call this on The Herd (sports radio show), 2 for the road.  Not that anyone reads this part of the email anyway.  

1, Had a district meeting on the talk, Tongues of Angels, by Elder Holland.  I try to read that talk once a transfer, and we did a district meeting on it and it went well.  Talks about not using sarcasm, even if you think you are skillful or clever with it. (Which I was under the impression I was) But he talks about how words hurt people, and sarcasm always leaving someone feeling hurt, even if thats not our intention. Super helped me a ton, and its something Ive been trying to overcome my entire mission. 

2, The forth missionary talk.  Elder Jaros sent it to me a little while back, and I try to read it once a transfer as well.  the biggest thing I get out of it goes along with a Michael Jordan quote that I love.  ´´Dont cheat the game, and it wont cheat you´´ If your a missionary, dont cheat your mission, or your transfer, and it wont cheat you.  Put in the work, take the extra step, run one more lap, throw one more punch. Dont cheat the game, and it wont cheat you.

Crooks

So obviously the highlight of my week, was getting the transfer call that I got to serve with Crooks haha.  I loved Elder Ayala so much, and we had a good two transfers together.  Elder Crooks was in my MTC district, and out of the five that came here, we were the only ones that stayed on the mission.  We had always joked that we would get to serve together, and it was soo sweet when Pres said we would.  Obviously the work comes first, but he is a sweet teacher,  I'm so stoked

He was the most hyper baptism ever.  Hes 11, and we reactivated his mom, and his older bothers.  Super sweet kid tho.  

Spiritual Stuff

Read the first 300 pages of Jesus the Christ this week.  Crazy haha.  Its the best book ever written ha.  Ill write more next week.  I have also started doing video logs every night, and I'm still writing in my journal, so the mish is well documented haha.  Love you guys, have a great week.
